Lords call to sort out covid funding for parishes
The government was challenged in the House of Lords on 3 December to 'sort out' out covid funding not being passed on from principal councils to local (parish and town) councils. NALC recently held a remote briefing via Zoom for several Peers on key issues facing the sector such as finances. Earlier this week they additionally briefed Baroness Neville-Rolfe, who then spoke in yesterday's debate on the spending review, stating funding wasn't being passed on and income had been affected, asking the minister to look into it and sort it out and ensure local councils were eligible for the forthcoming leisure fund. While the minister ran out of time to respond to this and other questions, he committed to replying in writing; Baroness Neville-Rolfe is also writing to him to follow up. You can read the debate on Hansard here or watch again on Parliamentlive.tv here.
Women in local government conference
Cllr Sue Baxter, was among the speaker line-up for the Women in Local Government Conference on 3 December. In a session entitled 'In the line of sight', Sue spoke about pitching your skills and putting yourself forward, identifying your unique skills and priorities to build a personal brand, and leading from the middle.
Review of the Practitioner's Guide
The technical working group of the Joint Panel on Accountability and Governance (JPAG) is currently working on a rewrite of the Practitioner's Guide including a major review of the section on internal audit. If you have any comments on the guide please let us know at email@example.com. In NALC's capacity as the secretariat to JPAG, they are also seeking expressions of interest to review the internal audit section – if you know anyone who has relevant experience and expertise please draw their attention to the project specification on our website here.
