NALC update - from Jonathan Owen (Chief Executive)

Happy New Year!

NALC would like to wish you all a Happy New Year and all the best for 2019.

Local Council Award Scheme

At the end of 2018, 326 local (parish and town) councils had already achieved a prestigious national award through the Local Council Award Scheme, recognised by the government, Local Government Association, and Society of Local Council Clerks (SLCC), and administered by NALC and county associations, including an impressive 40 councils securing Quality Gold. Another 320 councils have registered to participate in the scheme and we look forward to them securing their award in 2019. You can read more about these councils and how to get involved on the NALC website.

Implementing geological disposal

NALC have been working closely with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and Radioactive Waste Management (RWM) to ensure that local councils are aware of the potential of the government's proposals around implementing geological disposal of radioactive waste. On Wednesday 19 December BEIS published its policy paper Implementing Geological Disposal: Working with Communities on the long-term management of higher activity radioactive waste. This is a significant milestone as it means RWM can now begin to find a suitable location and willing community to host a geological disposal facility (GDF). To support the launch, RWM has updated their website with a range of publications including an introduction to geological disposal, community guidance and the outputs from national geological screening for a GDF.

Meetings and events in 2019

As well as two national conferences, on 11 February 2019 and 28/29 October 2019, NALC is holding a study tour to Bishops Stortford Town Council on 10 and 11 June 2019 – only a few places are remaining so please book as soon as possible to guarantee your place. We are also hosting three open days on 20 March, 16 July and 17 October for members to find out more about our work.

If you would like to attend an open day please email Claire FitzGerald at committees@nalc.gov.uk. Over the course of the year, we will also be holding 30 committee meetings, providing an opportunity for councillors from across the country to get together, share good practice and determine NALC's policy and service objectives. You can find out more about all our meetings and events on the website and if you want to get involved in NALC's work you can find out more here (login required) or get in touch with your county association.

And finally

Congratulations to everyone recognised in the New Year Honours list for services to communities and local government, in particular, Elisabeth Skinner, academic leader, SLCC, who was awarded an MBE.
