Overview:

This course explains the law relating to trusts and provides operational guidance for the trusteeship of charities.

Come away with a background of the statutory role, knowledge of roles and responsibilities in day to day operation, and a wider understanding of issues connected to trusts.

Course outline:

  • The Trusteeship role: Sole, joint and custodian, incorporated and holding trustees. Ex-officio trustees.
  • Appointment of trustees. The charity's governing document and its charitable purpose.
  • Charitable Incorporated Organisations
  • Separating charity property from local authority property.
  • Roles, duties and responsibilities of Trustees.
  • Examples of charitable trusts and how they might work: Recreation Grounds, village halls, allotments.
  • The Charity Commission.

This course is suitable for Parish Clerks who would like to know more about Charitable Trusts and Councillors who might be trustees.

Course tutor: Roger Taylor is a Consultant at Wellers Hedleys Solicitors, a firm based in Surrey which has an extensive practice dealing with Parish and Town Councils in England. He lectures on subjects such as Common Land, Village Greens and Charitable Trusts for the SLCC and on other matters relating to the practice and procedure of Parish and Town Councils for a number of County Associations.
